Organism → Organ → Tissue → Cell → Organelle → Molecule → Atom → Subatomic particle
| Level | Definition | Examples |
| Organism | a complete living thing | human, dog, oak tree, bacteria |
| Organ | made of tissues working together | heart, lungs, stomach, leaf |
| Tissue | a group of similar cells | muscle tissue, nerve tissue, plant tissue |
| Cell | the smallest unit of life | plant cell, animal cell, bacteria cell |
| Living things ↑ | Non-living things ↓ |
| Organelle | structures inside cells | nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplast, ribosome |
| Molecule | atoms bonded together | water (H2O), glucose, ATP, oxygen (O2) |
| Atom | the smallest unit of an element | carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen |
| Subatomic particle | particles inside atoms | protons (+), neutrons (0), electrons (−) |
Big idea: Life is organized from very large to extremely small. Each level is built from the one below it, so every level depends on the one beneath it.
Connection to ATP: ATP is a molecule, made of atoms. It gets built inside organelles (mitochondria) inside cells. The ATP those cells make powers the tissues, organs, and the whole organism.
